John “Jack” Almus Maxwell, Jr. passed away November 7, 2009 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He was born February 16, 1920 in Kansas City, Kansas, to John and Elsie Maxwell. He attended Kansas State University for two years, where he studied athletic management and civil engineering, when his education was interrupted by WWII. He joined the Army Air Force October 13, 1942, serving in the American Theater. He attained the rank of Staff Sgt., while receiving the Good Conduct, Victory Medal and Air Crew Member Wings. Jack was honorably discharged January 31, 1946. Jack married Mary Jo Diamond in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1970. In the late 1940’s, Jack moved to Oklahoma City with Victor L. Phillips. Jack founded Maxwell Supply Company in the late 1950’s. Jack was a member of OMCA, AGC of Oklahoma, ABC and a member Emeritus of ACDI. He retired to Ardmore. Jack is survived by his sister, Ruthetta Halbower of Massachusetts; son, John Alan Maxwell and wife Norma; daughter, Jane A. Maxwell-Jones and husband George C. Jones; grandchildren, Dr. M. Heather Knowles, PhD, Jason Almus Knowles, Detective John Almus Maxwell, III, Cody Alexander Maxwell; great-granddaughter, Riley Ann Knowles; step-son, Jack Pipkin; and various cousins, nieces and nephews. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, November 12, 2009, at the Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper Chapel, 6600 Broadway Ext., with interment in Resurrection Memorial Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Education and Employment Ministry or Feed the Children.
